Do it from the heart
There is a divine inheritance waiting for us—a reward far greater than any earthly compensation.
23 Whatever you do, do it from the heart, as something done for the Lord and not for people, 24 knowing that you will receive the reward of an inheritance from the Lord. You serve the Lord Christ.
Colossians 3:23-24
In the Bible, the value of diligent work and the importance of doing your job well are emphasized in several passages.
Colossians 3:23-24 is a call to Christians to approach all their work with enthusiasm, sincerity, and a God-centered perspective. It reassures believers that their labor is not in vain and encourages them to see their daily tasks as opportunities to serve and honor Christ, with the promise of an eternal reward.
The essence of these verses is about the attitude and motivation behind our actions.
1. "Whatever you do, do it from the heart": Our work and efforts should be sincere and wholehearted. It's not just about going through the motions but putting genuine effort and passion into our tasks, big or small.
2. "as something done for the Lord and not for people": Believers are encouraged to shift their perspective on whom they are ultimately serving with their work. Instead of working to please human bosses, clients, or even ourselves, we are encouraged to see our work as an offering to God. This perspective elevates the importance of even the most mundane tasks and can transform our work into worship.
3. "knowing that you will receive the reward of an inheritance from the Lord": While our earthly work might sometimes feel thankless or unrewarding, we are reminded that there is a divine inheritance waiting for us—a reward far greater than any earthly compensation. This inheritance is guaranteed for those who belong to Christ and serve Him faithfully.
4. "You serve the Lord Christ": This final declaration is a powerful reminder of the Christian's ultimate allegiance and service. Despite various earthly roles and responsibilities, the ultimate 'employer' or authority we serve is Christ Himself. This acknowledgment elevates the dignity of all kinds of work when done in His name.
