Why you shouldn't stress over apocalyptic hurricane predictions
The Bible advises against worrying about things that are beyond our control.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) recently made the doom and gloom media salivate with its 2024 pre-hurricane season forecast showing above-normal activity and an 85% chance of 17 to 25 named storms, the highest number NOAA has ever forecast in its preseason outlook. Other hurricane season forecasters have made similar predictions for the 2024 hurricane season. An average season has 14 named storms.
Before you get stressed over the predictions for the 2024 hurricane season, let’s remember that every single year these same forecasters change their predictions multiple times throughout the season. Imagine wagering a bet on the results of a lengthy professional baseball season and then simply being able to change your predictions several times during the season. Predictions don’t work like this, unless you’re in the hurricane season forecast business.
The bigger reason not to stress over apocalyptic hurricane season predictions is because the Bible advises against worrying about things that are beyond our control.
Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:6-7
Philippians 4:6-7 encourages us to bring our concerns to God through prayer and thanksgiving, and in return, we will receive a peace that surpasses human understanding.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart;
    do not depend on your own understanding.
Seek his will in all you do,
    and he will show you which path to take.
Proverbs 3:5-6
Proverbs 3:5-6 underscores the importance of complete trust in God’s wisdom and guidance, especially when we are faced with situations that are beyond our control. It encourages us to trust in God’s provision and to let go of our anxieties, knowing that He is in control of our lives.
Even in the midst of chaos and danger, and intentionally scary media headlines, we can find peace and security in God. We are encouraged to stop worrying, to stop trying to solve our problems in our own strength, and instead to trust in God and His plan.
They do not fear bad news; they confidently trust the LORD to care for them.
Psalm 112:7
Firmly fix your heart on God, and have confidence in His protection and guidance.
